Greater Frenchtown Marketplace and Heritage Hub
Greater Frenchtown’s Marketplace and Heritage Hub (Heritage Hub) is located in an historic Black neighborhood, one of the oldest in Tallahassee. The area is also designated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture as a “food desert,” a location where residents have low access to and availability of fresh food retail establishments.
Begun as a community-led initiative, and established in cooperation with many community-based organizations, Heritage Hub provides both fresh food access and economic opportunity for consumers and producers across the Big Bend. The enhanced retail platform provides business support services for small farmers and food entrepreneurs, as well as consumer education services to develop demand for locally-produced food.
Business services include shared office and meeting space, marketing support, certified kitchen, vendor education, small business library, indoor/outdoor farmers market and extended product display options. Consumer development includes nutrition education, cooking classes, gardening workshops, SNAP and WIC enrollment, art workshops and community events.
Heritage Hub is housed in a 2,900+ square foot facility, with half an acre of open-air market area and demonstration gardens. Community engagement efforts include focus groups, interactive presentations and producer/consumer surveys to ensure that services match community interest and meet community need.
